The Ramp
A datum set was created by extending the three site-adjacent grid systems past their urban terminus, and then bringing the street-wide strips down to the site. This, in combination with the historical variation in coastline (see historical maps above), revealed a dense interplay of infrastructure, nature, and the perception of permanence in an ever-shifting city. These strips of city were then further abstracted to isolate an urban rhythm that could describe space on multiple scales and in any orientation. Explorative drawing suggested spacial and material properties within the strips. The laser cutter was then used as a nearly-realtime three dimensional drawing tool. The final design attempts to pull apart the urban skin at site-edge, literally cantilevering the ground plane to form a covered passage to the ferry terminal and restaurant, while also sinking the ground to create market space. The top layer is park, the center is restaurant, and the ferry is experienced as a periodic component inserted into the whole.
